VILLAGE DETAILS (page 2)

….Our facilities and amenities                                                           <Back to Village details (page 1)

Salhouse Jubilee Hall, situated in Lower Street, is the centre for most community group activities as well as many of the village events.
Creation of the Jubilee Hall was achieved after several years of campaigning and the formation of a dedicated project committee, “Salhouse 2000”, to manage the fund raising programme. It was opened in October 2002 by Louise Priest, a popular local presenter on BBC Radio Norfolk, replacing the old prefabricated building previously located in Mill Rd. It was built on the site of the old village school, originating in 1844, and by utilising the original shell of the old school building has retained the style and character, much to the delight of the ex pupils once taught there.
Salhouse Primary School is a Voluntary Controlled School providing early education for 4 - 11 year olds. Located in Cheyney Avenue, it was opened in 1976 and currently has some 250 children in attendance. Pupils then either go on to the state comprehensives of Broadland High School in Hoveton or Thorpe St Andrew School in Thorpe (Norwich), or alternatively to fee paying schools in the area. Visit the school web site on www.salhouse.norfolk.sch.uk
A group called “Friends of Salhouse School” (FOSS) is set up as a registered charity to undertake fund raising activities for boosting school funds in order to provide extra benefits for the recreation and education of the children.
Pre-school children are able to attend a Playgroup facility run at the Jubilee Hall which also includes a Pram & Pushchair section.

There are two Public Houses in Salhouse,
The Bell Inn located in Lower St in the centre of the village and The Lodge in Vicarage Rd on the northern edge towards Wroxham.
The Lodge is a country house style of Pub and small hotel with a large dining and function facility whereas The Bell Inn is an original “olde world” local style of village pub serving bar food and with a small restaurant.

A Sports and Playing Field is located in Thieves Lane that is used as a general recreation area for the children and for use by the village based Salhouse Rovers Football Club for training and inter-league matches.

Salhouse Bowling Green is conveniently situated behind The Bell Inn on Lower Street and is the home of the Salhouse Bell Bowls Club.

….Our shops and services

As with all villages The Post Office and Local Store are a key feature to village life. Located in Lower Street this has been in existence since 1929, until 2002 under the same family, providing Post Office services as well as general groceries and newspapers. Dry cleaning, laundry repairs and shoe repairs are also collected and returned through an externally sourced service.

Salhouse Railway Station is situated on the ‘Bittern Line’ running via the scenic Norfolk countryside from Norwich to Cromer and Sheringham on the north Norfolk coast. This carries commuters and in the summer time and is also regularly used by summer visitors .This line is undergoing a revival through government plans for improving such stations and lines through the Community Rail Partnership programme. A local coordinator has been appointed to run the ‘Adopt a Station’ initiative under which the station is being revitalised and promoted through community awareness programmes A bus service operates in conjunction with the railway in Norwich to provide transportation between the railway station and the city centre.
For further Information about the ‘Adopt a Station’ initiative see the Community Groups page on this site.
